Understanding the Different Types of Cannabis Edibles and Their Effects

October 14, 2024

Cannabis is a versatile hobby that offers highly variable experiences that users can curate according to their individual preferences, goals, and tolerances. For many, smoking does not produce the effects they’re looking for, which could be anything from a prolonged high to less intense effects. For these consumers, cannabis edibles are often a much more suitable choice, and they are also great for individuals who would like to consume discreetly — without the fear of making their clothes smell like weed.

No matter your reason for considering edibles, it is important to understand how the different types may function and which effects to expect. Edibles do not offer the same experience as a blunt, but this can be a big advantage when used strategically.

Here are some of the different types of cannabis edibles and their effects so you can make an informed choice.

Sativa vs. Indica Varieties

Before you can choose the type of edible you want, you’ll need to decide on which strains provide the effects you’re looking for. In general, edibles can be separated into two varieties: Sativa and Indica. A Sativa edible comes from marijuana that tends to produce a head high, contributing to increased energy, inspiration, and euphoria.

On the other hand, Indica edibles derive from plants that are known for their body highs and relaxing properties. You may experience muscle relaxation, pain relief, or even a feeling of being glued to the couch.

Some edibles are hybrids, coming from marijuana plants with both Sativa and Indica heritage. These edibles may offer more balanced effects, making them especially appealing for those who want to avoid specific effects of Sativa or Indica strains, as well as consumers who are new to edibles in general.

The Edible Experience

Edibles function differently from other forms of consumption, including smoking. While hitting a blunt can bring on effects quickly, these effects also tend to fade quickly until the next hit. However, edibles prolong the experience because the body must digest them before the terpenes begin to circulate.

In general, expect eddies to take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours to reach their full effect. Once they do, you’re likely to be able to enjoy the strain’s effects for multiple hours before they start to wane. Just remember to take it slow; you can always consume more if the high isn’t potent enough, but you can’t undo a dose. Give your body plenty of time to ramp up.

Edible Types

If you’re ready to try edibles, you’ll notice there are multiple types to choose from. In general, consumers will need to select between:

  • Gummies – A staple of easy-to-consume edibles, gummies come in a wide range of types and effects. They tend to be not only effective but pleasant to eat thanks to their sharp, fruity flavors. Gummies are easy to dose; typically, they are listed in mg per gummy.
  • Baked Goods – The long-time favorite edibles, such as brownies and cookies, remain popular because they are tasty, more substantial than gummies, and easier to incorporate a wide range of strains into. However, it is also easy to overconsume brownies, and dosage may be difficult to estimate if you make pot brownies at home.
  • Chocolate – Chocolate infused with cannabis is becoming more popular as a shelf-stable way to keep edibles on hand. Chocolate is usually easy to dose when purchased from a dispensary, as it will come with pre-marked break lines per dose.
  • Drinks – Cannabis-infused drinks are becoming more common as a refreshing way to incorporate weed. These fizzy refreshments are dosed at a serving size of one can and may come into effect faster than food items thanks to their easy-to-digest liquid components.
  • Savory Items – In more recent times, infused cuisine has become more popular as a divergence from the focus on sweet treats. Cannabis-infused oils, butters, and more can give people unlimited creativity to craft fully curated meals — or just make a quick snack. From popcorn to buttered toast or a full three-course dinner, edibles can transform savory items, too. However, the larger the meal, the longer the effects will take to kick in (and the more unpredictable they may be if you make the meal yourself).
